The Kanabec History Center offers various workshops throughout the year. Up coming workshops include:

Photography Workshop Series With Instructor Dee Kotaska

Photography can be a fun, invigorating and enlightening way to capture and share the world we see and experience. The advent of digital cameras has made photography so much more accessible and at the same time, more confusing. These workshops are designed to explain photography in understandable terms in a fun setting. Once we understand how cameras work, we will work to develop an “eye” for photography and creative artistic expression through the medium of photography. Sign up for any workshop or combination of workshops. Call the History Center 320-679-1665 or e-mail: center@kanabechistory.org to register. Workshops must be pre-paid.

Workshop I: Understanding the Digital Camera
Tues. May 1 (7-to 9:30 PM) Fee: $25

Cameras have advanced greatly since the days of simply “pointing and shooting.” Even the smallest camera has a lot more capability than most photographers are aware of. In this workshop, we will discuss how a camera works, the difference between SLR and point and shoot camera and film and digital camera. We will spend time negotiating the menus and options of digital cameras. Since each camera has a different program, it is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT EACH PERSON BRING THEIR CAMERA AND MANUAL TO THE CLASS.

Open to all levels. Class size: Min. 3, Max. 12

Workshop II: Creating Better Photographs: Composition and Design
Tues. May 8, 2012 (7 to 9 PM) Fee: $25

So often our photos don't look like what we saw in real life. In this workshop we will discuss ways to create photographs in the camera that more closely resemble what we saw. We will also discuss what makes a pleasing photograph rather than just a snap shot. This includes composition-just what goes into creating a pleasing image. Photography literally means to "write with light" so we will discuss how to work with natural light. Hints on people photography will be shared.

Appropriate for all levels. Digital and film Camera, Point and Shoot and SLR.
Workshop size: Min. 3 Max. room capacity

Workshop III: Understanding The Digital SLR
and Using Manual Exposure Settings

Tues. May 22, 2012  (7 to 9:30 PM.) Fee: $25

Today's cameras have automatic exposure settings that will give the correct exposure in most situations. However, there are situations when one wants to override the automatic settings and control the shutter speed and aperture or create special effects. We will review the features that distinguish SLR from film cameras and how to set and use those features. We will also discuss aperture and shutter speeds and other factors like ISO that affect getting a more correctly exposed image. Appropriate for SLR camera owners or point and shoot cameras that have the capibility of manual exposure settings. MUST BRING CAMERA AND MANUAL.

Workshop size: Min. 2 Max. 10

Workshop IV: Creating Images in the Field
Tues. May 29, 2011 (6 to 9 PM) Fee: $35

This is a 3 hour workshop. We will walk around the History Center grounds and drive to other sites in Mora. We will discuss what the light of the day is telling us about the images we can take and other factors/assignments for the day. Each person will have individual time in the field with the instructor to go over their camera, suggestions for creating a image with "pop" or other questions.  BRING YOUR CAMERA AND MANUAL. Dress appropriately for the day. If weather is REALLY inclement, listen to KBEK 95.5 FM for cancellation information.

Min: 2 Abosute Max: 4
